Trip Generation

In this Workflow step, you will enter the Trip Generation data for each development Zone in the network in a tabular setup. The data entry is all user-defined with calculations completed based on your entries.

In the upper right corner of the workflow, the position of the Trip Generation table can be switched to the horizontal or vertical position using the Switch Table Position for a better view of the table.

Data entry is similar to other data tables in the Workflow Panel, using text and numerical entries, drop-down lists, and checkboxes, as shown in the figure below. Each of the trip generation entries are described in the table Trip Generation Parameters below:

Figure 20: Trip Generation Table

Table 25: Trip Generation Parameters

Parameter Description Details

No

Zone number

Name

Zone name

Project name

Land Use variables

Description of land use type

Examples include single family residential, office, retail, etc.

Land Use Code

Code number for referencing land use type

Example would be use of ITE land use code from Trip Generation Manual

Data Entry

Rate or Trips. When using the ITE Trip Gen App API, Rate yields trips from the Rate method, and Trips yields trips from the Fitted Curve Method.

Users can enter either a trip generation rate or directly enter the number of trips (see section ITE Trip Gen App API)

Independent Variable

Variable that is the basis of the trip generation rate

Examples include dwelling units, thousand square-feet of leasable area, occupied hotel rooms, students, etc.

Trip Generation Rate

Trip generation rate per independent variable, for the time period of analysis

Quantity

Quantity of the Independent Variable

% In

Percentage of trips that are inbound to the Zone

% Out

Percentage of trips that are outbound from the Zone

Trips Generated

Number of trips generated

Product of Independent Variable x Trip Generation Rate x Quantity

Trips In

Number of trips generated inbound to the Zone

Product of Trips Generated x % In if Data Entry = Rate, or user entered value if Data Entry = Trips

Trips Out

Number of trips generated outbound from the Zone

Product of Trips Generated x % Out if Data Entry = Rate, or user entered value if Data Entry = Trips

% Internal Capture

Factor to reduce and adjust trips, e.g. to define a public transport utilization factor

Affects the Trips In, Trips Out, and Trips Generated values

Trips Generated Adjusted

Number of trips generated in consideration of the % Internal Capture value

  • If Data Entry = Rate Trips: Trips Generated Adjusted := round(x * Trips Generated)
  • If Data Entry = Trips: Trips Generated Adjusted := round(x * (Trips In Adjusted + Trips Out Adjusted))

Trips In Adjusted

Number of trips generated inbound to the Zone in consideration of the % Internal Capture value

Trips In Adjusted := round(x * Trips In)

Trips Out Adjusted

Number of trips generated outbound to the Zone in consideration of the % Internal Capture value

Trips Out Adjusted := round(x * Trips Out)

Trip Type

Trip added to or removed from the network

  • Added should be selected for all new trips to the network (i.e., from new development projects).
  • Removed should be selected for trips to be removed from the network (i.e., to represent existing trips from a land use that will be removed).

Analyze

Checkbox to select if Zone should be analyzed or not in current scenario

When checked, trips from the Zone will be generated for the current scenario.

ITE TripGen

Opens PTV Vistro’s ITE Trip Gen API dialog

After log in, this link opens PTV Vistro’s ITE Trip Gen API dialog to interface with the ITE Trip Gen App data (see section ITE Trip Gen App API). This can also be accessed with a right-click of the context menu on each data row.

The trip generation data are applied, along with the trip distribution data entered in the Trip Distribution Workflow Task Table (see section Trip Distribution) and the Path percentages entered in Trip Assignment Workflow Task Table (see section Trip Assignment), to determine the traffic assignments on the network.
