Notes on the definition and use of emission factors

In addition to the system-based COPERT vehicle strata, user-defined vehicle strata can also be defined. The same rules for the use of emission factors in the calculation apply to both types of vehicle strata. Below you will find information that should be considered in particular when entering emission factors for user-defined vehicle strata:

  • The COPERT category determines the granularity in which the emission factors must be available. Emission factors are required per speed class for the categories passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and L-category, and per speed class and slope for the heavy duty truck and bus categories.

  • The entry for the fuel is used to calculate specific consumption (diesel, gasoline, electric). If the fuel is not unique (e.g. LPG BiFuel, FlexiFuel Vehicle), the vehicle stratum is not taken into account when determining these consumption values. The calculation of fuel consumption in MJ is not affected by this.

  • If emission factors are not available for all gradients for which they are requested, an emission factor of a neighboring gradient class is used for the calculation, should this be available.

  • To ensure that user-defined vehicle strata are correctly included in the calculation, emission factors must be defined for all pollutants that are to be calculated.

  • If an emission factor is requested that is not defined (i.e. the corresponding attribute is empty), the calculation is based on zero.

Please also take note of the messages after carrying out the emission calculation according to COPERT.
