Comparison of macroscopic and activity-based demand models

Both macroscopic and activity-based demand models have their advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages of the procedures available at Visum over macroscopic models lie in aspects such as

  • Time-differentiated skims

  • High spatial resolution

  • Consistent tour context

  • Multimodal trip chains

  • Explicit choice of workplace

  • Individual user preferences instead of behavioral homogeneous person groups

This allows many of the current challenges to be analyzed much more precisely than with conventional aggregated models, for example:

  • Morning toll (spatial/dynamic/adaptive pricing systems)

  • Parking space management

  • E-mobility

  • Work from home

  • Constant workplace for short-term forecasts

At the same time, activity-based models have some disadvantages, such as

  • Moderately increased budgets for time and effort

  • Slightly higher data requirements (finer resolution)

  • Longer run times

However, a decision for or against activity-based models should be based on the requirements of the model.
