Editing regular services

In the tabular timetable, you can display regular vehicle journeys individually or in the regular services mode. The required attribute Service trip pattern number to do so, can be determined in the tabular timetable or via the procedure sequence (Calculating service trip patterns). The difference between these two options is that in the timetable, only the vehicle journeys displayed are taken into account.

Determining service trip patterns in the tabular timetable

1.  On the toolbar of the timetable, click the Service trip pattern calculation settings button.

The Parameters: Calculate service trip patterns window opens.

2.  Make the desired changes.

Element

Description

Take the spatial extent of vehicle journeys into account

If the option has been selected, only vehicle journeys with identical start and end stops are put together in one regular service pattern.

Note

In the occurrence of shortened vehicle journeys during off-peak hours which match a regular service, the option should not be selected so that these vehicle journeys also enter the service pattern.

Objective of procedure

Maximize number of veh. journeys in regular service pattern

If the option has been selected, the regular services with the maximum number of vehicle journeys are displayed as a headway patterns.

Notes

Besides constant temporal distances of vehicle journeys changing headway patterns are also permitted. Each time difference may occur multiple times (for example, the headway pattern 6/7/7).

Maximize temporal dimensions of regular service patterns

If this option has been selected, the regular services which span the longest period of time are displayed as headway patterns.

Take a look at the example for an explanation of the option (Example).

Base headway

Identifying service trip patterns with any service interval

Select this option to group vehicle journeys with the same differences into service trip patterns. The time differences may differ between trip patterns.

Note

This option is available if the option Maximize number of veh. journeys in regular service pattern is selected.

Only fractured multiples of the base headway are permitted as service intervals for a service trip pattern

Select this option to specify a base headway that limits the service trip patterns possible. The time difference between vehicle journeys of a service trip pattern must be a multiple of the base headway or a multiple of half, a third, or a quarter of the base headway. The time lag between the vehicle journeys in a service trip pattern must not be smaller than the base headway.

Example

If you enter a base headway of 30 min, the following service trip patterns are possible:

  • 90 min is a multiple of 30/1
  • 45 min is a multiple of 30/2

Notes

This option is available if the option Maximize number of veh. journeys in regular service pattern is selected.

3.  Confirm with OK.

4.  On the toolbar of the timetable, click the Calculate regular services groups button.

The service trip patterns are calculated. The calculation is identical to the procedure Calculate service trip patterns (Calculating service trip patterns)

  • When picking option Maximize number of veh. journeys in regular service pattern, Visum displays the A-B-C-D-E-F-G (6 vehicle journeys) headway of 10 minutes and vehicle journey H as single vehicle journey. The A-C-E-G-H headway of 20 minutes contains just 5 vehicle journeys and is thus not displayed.
  • When picking option Maximize temporal dimensions of regular service patterns, the 20 minutes headways A-C-E-G-H (1 hour 20 minutes) and B-D-F (40 minutes) will be displayed.
Displaying service trip patterns

After you have determined the service trip patterns in the procedure sequence or in the tabular timetable, you can show the vehicle journeys grouped by service trip pattern numbers.

  • ►  On the toolbar of the tabular timetable, click the  Group by service trip patterns icon.

In the Vehicle journeys section, the Service trip pattern number is displayed in the last row, and the vehicle journeys aggregated by this attribute are shown.

Terminating the display by service trip pattern
  • ►  On the toolbar of the tabular timetable, click the  Ungroup icon.
Display by service trip pattern numbers

This display is based on the Service trip pattern number as the only criterion for the graphical depiction of the vehicle journeys of a time profile. Vehicle journeys with the same service trip pattern number are displayed in one joint column if the data is consistent.

A service trip pattern is considered consistent if the (possibly virtual) departure times of its vehicle journeys fit into a service pattern at the start stop point of the time profile, i.e. the service trip pattern consists of four vehicle journeys at least and all departures have a recurring pattern, which must be less than four hours.

If these requirements are not met, there has been an input error, since the calculation algorithm does not produce any inconsistent values. They can only result from incorrect manual post-processing.

In this case, a warning will be issued and the Service trip pattern number of the vehicle journeys concerned are set to 0. Thus, all vehicle journeys of the faulty service trip patterns are displayed individually.

The timetable interprets a Service trip pattern number of zero as if the vehicle journey does not match any pattern and therefore has to be displayed separately.

Editing the service trip pattern number

Since vehicle journeys grouped according to their Service trip pattern number have less attributes in common than vehicle journeys grouped according to the rules applicable so far, the number of editable attributes has to be limited considerably.

Attributes of vehicle journey sections are never modified when edited in this display mode. Items are only deleted or added if the headway end is changed.

Hereby, new vehicle journeys with default values are generated, i.e. on the whole time profile and with exactly one vehicle journey section, the valid day daily, the standard operator of the associated line and the standard vehicle combination of the time profile.

Editing times of regular services

You can edit regular services directly in the tabular timetable. To do so, mark the desired regular service column and double-click into the field of your choice. The following applies to temporal changes of regular services:

  • The number of vehicle journeys resulting from changes made to a headway is automatically calculated and displayed. Thereby, based on the headway start, the departure times are automatically adjusted so that they correspond to the changed headway time. Vehicle journeys that due to the change lie after the headway end are deleted. If the headway end is not reached with the existing number of vehicle journeys, vehicle journeys are added.
  • If you edit the headway start, the interval is shifted while the length and the headway time remain the same.
  • If you edit the headway end, the vehicle journey supply changes, taking into account the current headway time. A 1h headway from 6 to 10 o’clock, for example, generates a new headway end of 11 o'clock which results in an additional vehicle journey.

Note: Only after the changes listed above are the service trip patterns automatically recalculated. When you make other changes, e.g. to the departure time or an individual vehicle journey, they are not automatically recalculated.

Showing regular service information

In the tabular timetable, in the Vehicle journeys section, you can show additional headway information. In this case, four additional headers are shown that are created via the aggregation functions:

  • Headway start shows the earliest departure time of a service trip pattern
  • Headway end shows the latest departure time of a service trip pattern.
  • Headway time shows the time difference between vehicle journeys within a service trip pattern if there is a uniform time difference. Otherwise, the field is empty.
  • Number of vehicle journeys shows the number of vehicle journeys in the service trip pattern.
  • ►  On the toolbar of the tabular timetable, click the Display regular service information button .

The regular service information is displayed in the four top rows of the timetable.

Editing regular service information

You may edit certain regular services attributes:

1.  In the column of the desired regular services information, click the symbol.

2.  Enter the desired value.

3.  Confirm with OK.

Tip: Alternatively, to edit the regular services information, right-click in the vehicle journey and from the shortcut menu, choose the desired information.
